EVENT MATERIALS
Biolog is a small-group discussion series designed primarily for members of the Biolà community. Each session typically brings together 4–6 participants with shared or overlapping interests for informal conversations about science, research, and academic life.
Session 07 | Sleep
Sleep is a biologically regulated process shaped by both molecular mechanisms and neural circuits. Circadian clock genes, together with sleep–wake circuits in the hypothalamus and brainstem, help regulate transitions between wakefulness, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
Key sleep-related neuronal populations, including those in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO) and orexin/hypocretin system, play important roles in maintaining and switching behavioral states.
Disrupted sleep can impair memory, attention, and decision-making. Sleep disturbances are also commonly associated with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, where insomnia, altered sleep architecture, and REM-related abnormalities may accompany or worsen disease progression.
Understanding the molecular and circuit mechanisms of sleep is therefore essential for addressing sleep-related cognitive and neurological problems.
About the Session
To explore recent advances and emerging questions in sleep research, Biolà will host Biolog Session 07: Sleep.
We are inviting 4–6 participants to give short presentations of no more than 10 minutes each.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Recent advances in sleep research
- Neural circuits underlying sleep and wakefulness
- Circadian rhythms and molecular regulation of sleep
- NREM and REM sleep mechanisms
- Sleep, memory, and cognition
- Sleep disturbances in neurological disorders
- Personal perspectives on the field
- Your own research related to sleep
If more than six participants sign up to present, we may organize two separate sessions to maintain a comfortable and interactive discussion format.
How to Participate
If you are interested in sharing your work, introducing a topic, or simply joining the discussion, we would be very happy to have you.
We look forward to seeing you at Biolog Session 07!
